I was surprised to find my apartment building surrounded by a crowd and a few sets of emergency vehicles. Even more surprising was the smoke coming from the building.

I parked a short distance away. When I got close to the police line, I got the attention of an officer.

“Excuse me, I live in the building,” I told her. “What’s going on?”

The woman came over and said, “I hope you’re not the guy who lives in the basement.”

I sighed. “I am. What happened?”

She consulted a notepad before asking, “You’re Hunter Black?”

“Yeah.”

“Well, your apartment’s been completely torched. Yours wasn’t the only one damaged, but it seems to have been where the fire began.”

“Is everything in there ruined?” Not that I had anything of any value in that place, but I was curious.

The officer nodded. “I’m afraid so.”

She took my mobile phone number and told me not to leave town. She reassured me it didn’t look like arson, but they would still be investigating the cause of the fire.

I had a few ideas about the cause myself: Rinehart. That guy needed to die.

Just as I was about to leave, the officer got a message on her radio. I couldn’t hear the voice clearly but I thought I heard my name. I had a sinking feeling in my stomach. Then the officer frowned and looked at me, holding up her hand to indicate I should stay put. When she finished the call, she turned her full attention to me.

“Do you have another apartment, Mister Black?” she asked.

It turned out both my places had been torched. I told the police I was as stumped as they were. I told that to the female officer there in the street outside the smoking building, and I told an investigating detective the same thing an hour later down at the station. That’s where I found out that my place of work had also been burned out.

“I really, really don’t know,” I told them.

They asked for lists of enemies, but I didn’t have any to name for them. The one enemy that counted wasn’t exactly someone I could send the police after. Then came the awkwardness of an alibi: I didn’t have one.

I told the police I’d been out for a drive in the country. This was true enough. I didn’t tell them about the elves and the dryad: they wouldn’t have believed me and if they somehow had, it would not have worked to my advantage.

Eventually, having no crime to charge me with, the police let me go. They warned me they’d be keeping an eye on me. This was the last thing I needed, given my new lifestyle. I told them I would be staying at a friend’s house and gave them Nikki’s name and address.

I made my way there next. What I really wanted to do was hunt that half-lizard bastard and make him eat his own wings, but that wasn’t an option at the time, so I settled for rest. At least I could be sure that the jerk had run out of places to burn.
